In-Vitro Fertilisation- Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET)
Embryo Freezing
After embryo replacement, surplus embryos can be frozen and kept for future use. If the fresh cycle is unsuccessful, the couple can attempt FET in the following cycles; or in cases where the fresh cycle works, they can use their embryos a few years later for a second child. In accordance with the Code of Practice on Reproductive Technology in Hong Kong, frozen embryos can be kept for a maximum of ten years.
Vitrification
- Vitrification is a new method used to freeze embryos. It means very rapid freezing of the embryos. It minimizes the incidence of harmful intracellular ice crystal formation. It is suitable for day 2 (2-4 cell stage) to day 5 (blastocyst stage) embryos. The ‘post thaw survival’ and pregnancy rate are much higher than conventional freezing.
- Vitrification can also be used to freeze oocytes. (please refer to the section “ associated reproductive technologies”)
