Ovulation Induction (OI)

Ovulation induction is suitable for female with ovulatory dysfunction and with normal fallopian tubes. Ovulation Induction involves the use of oral or injectable medications to stimulate the development of mature egg(s) in the ovaries of these women.

Some women with anovulation may have a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). These women do not regularly develop mature eggs without the help of medication.

Ovulation induction is performed with the following medication:

  • Clomid
  • Gonadotrophin Injection
  • Bromocryptine for patients with hyperprolactinaemia

For gonadotrophin injection, the female will receive low doses of gonadotrophins for ten days. The date of ovulation is monitored by ultrasound with optional hormone tests. Ultrasound is recommended to be performed to assess follicle development and exclude multiple mature follicles formation.

Ovulation induction/ controlled ovarian stimulation is different from controlled ovarian hyperstimulation where multiple mature follicles or eggs are stimulated in order to increase the success rates with IVF treatment. For ovarian induction/ovarian controlled stimulation, we aim at 1-3 mature follicles.

On the day of ovulation, fertilization may be achieved through sexual intercourse or intra-uterine insemination.
